Uttranchal » History
Uttaranchal is one of the most sacred places of India. It gives view of the perfect blend of Hindu culture with the Buddhist culture. The state inherited this name due to its geographical position. This region was well known in ancient as the abode of gods and the origin of the river Ganga. Two major kingdoms had ruled over Uttaranchal, which in the beginning of the eighteenth century fell to the Gorkha Empire. The Gorkha Empire was also known as Tehri. Prior to that, the Kingdom of Garhwal used to be ruled in the western part of state, while Kumaon in the eastern province. After independence Tehri was merged in the Uttar Pradesh.
