Dharamsala was established in the year 1849, by British rulers, for the purpose of having a place where they escape from the scorching heat of Indian plains.

Dharamshala is the district hqr. of Kangra district. This is a hill station lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 18kms. north east of Kangra town. Hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains enfold three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. The snow line is perhaps more easily accessible at Dharamshala than at any other hill resort and it is possible to trek to snow point after an early morning's start.

Dharamsala popularly known as the Scotland of India, is one of the 80 hill stations established by the British between 1815 and 1847 and has one of the most spectacular settings
for a hill station is closest to the perennial snowline and is built along a spur of the Dhaula Dhar range. The town varies in height from 1250 meters at the bazaar to 1768 metres at McLeodganj. Dharamsala is surrounded by deodar forests and provides a superb view of the great granite mountains that almost over chang the town.

About 10 kms. away from Dharamsala is McLeodganj which has a strong Tibetan influence. Monks in deep red are a common sight in this town and it is the headquarters of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama settled here after his flight across the Himalayas following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in oct. 1959 The Tibetan community has tended to take over the hospitality business and provide cheap and clean hotels and small friendly restaurants, The following words might help you in having an exchange in Tibetan

Later on, the hill resort developed into big town and now is divided into two distinct parts – ‘Lower Dharamsala’ i.e. the civil and business area with Courts and Kotwali bazar and ‘Upper Dharamsala’ i.e. places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj.

The place also serves as the residence of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Dharamshala is surrounded by some interesting and beautiful tourist attractions that make up its excursions. Read on to know about the places to see near Dharamsala.

Bhagsunag Fall
Bhagsunag Fall is located 11 kilometers away from Dharamshala town and has an ancient temple, a fresh water spring, many waterfalls and numerous slate quarries.

The place is reachable by road from McLeodganj. A dip in the chilly water of the fall gives an extraordinary experience.

St. John's Church
Located some eight kilometers from Dharamsala, this church is situated in the forest between Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj.

It has lovely spotted glass windows and there is a Christian cemetery around it, housing the grave of Lord Elgin who wished to be buried here.

Dharamkot
Dharamkot is located 14 kilometers away from Dharamshala and serves as an ideal picnic spot. It can be reached from Bhagsu side, through a trekking route.

The place is situated amidst sub-Himalayan range of mountains and gives panoramic views of the surrounds.

Kunal Pathari
Located three kilometers away from Dharamshala, Kunal Pathari is a temple of the local Goddess. It is quite popular among local masses for religious reasons. People come here everyday, in large numbers, to have a look at the statue of the Goddess and pay their respects.

Dal Lake
Dal Lake is located next to Tibetan Children’s village and, about eleven kilometers away from Dharamsala, forms a major excursion.

The place has great beauty and peace. A popular destination for newly married couples, Dal Lake attracts tourists easily.

Triund
Located 17 kilometers from Dharamsala town and at an altitude of 2,827 meters, Triund is a very popular picnic destination.

The peace offered by the place, combined with the panoramic beauty of the surrounding locales, make sure to leave an impact on visitors.
