The other spectacular cave monastery of Zanskar, Zongkhul falls on the Padum-Kishtwar trekking trail, just before the ascent of Omasi-la Pass begins.
Situated like a Swallow’s nest on the rock face of the Ating George, the monastery is associated by legend with the famous Indian Yogi, Naropa, who lectured in the Nalanda and Vikramsila Universities.

The frescos on the cave walls are very old and reflect a high degree of artistic achievement.
These are believed to be the original murals executed by Zhadpa Dorje, The celebrated scholar-painter of the same monastery who was active about 300 years ago.
Over PensiLa is the 5,000 sq km vast expanse of concentrated mountains and long valleys of Zanskar, an ancient kingdom with a better preserved cultural entity
Other places of interest in Zanskar are Karsha with its large and wealthy monastery and Zangla.
Treks commence from here for Lamayuru and Hemis.
Phugtal and Zongkhul are two famous cave monasteries in Zanskar. To savor a typical experience of western Ladakh, a trip to Sabku, Panikahar and Parkachik is a must.
The old castle, now in ruins except for a small chapel, occupies a hill overlooking the desertic valley below.
Nearby is an old Buddhist nunnery worth a visit to observe the austere lifestyle of the small community of nuns.
