Ruins of seven cities confirm the evolutions and disintegrations of numerous kingdom sprang up, from Rajputs to Mughals and lastly to the Britishers. Historians have traced the existence of habituations dated back to 1BC and the Hindu epic Mahabharata has verified this. The Rajputs laid the foundation of modern Delhi in 736 AD. In 1199 AD, the Chauhans expanded their territory and merged it into their settlements. In 1290, Ala-Ud-Khilaji integrated Delhi into his kingdom. Delhi faced a set back in 1398 AD when the Mangolian army led by Timur invaded and plundered it. In the 15th century, the Mughal Empire took over Delhi, which later on divided between the local chieftains and Marathas. Lastly, the British removed the last ruler of Mughals in 1803 and brought it British India Company.
