Mathura Cuisine widely known as birth place of lord Krishna is located on the western bank of river Yamuna at latitude 27degree 41 Minute N and 77Degree and 41 Minuet E. It is 145 Km south-east of Delhi and 58 Km north west of Agra in the State of Uttar Pradesh. For about 3000 Year it was the hub of culture and civilization.

Held in sanctity by the Buddhists, Jain and Brahmanical faith alike, it has a long and chequered history. One of the Sapta Mahapuris, it was ruled in turns by the kings of Solar and Lunar dynasties and became a center of three Cultures India Indo-Scythian and Hellenstic.

For are creation Mathura is the Athens of India. The great school of sculpture known as Mathura school of Art flourished here for 1200 Years. Such proliflic creativety and gushing devotion to novel Art Forms and experi-ment in

sculptures and clay figurines as found in this school are rare in the annals of indian Art History. A survey of this glorious School of Art can be made in the Government Museum, Mathura.

The present day Mathura abounds in Place of Religious and Historic Interest, All round the year A large number of Festival and fairs are held in Matura and adjoining areas of Vrindavan Gokul, Brazen and Goverdhan The rascal of Brij is thematically thebasis of many performing Arts.

Places of Interest in Mathura: Shri Krishna Janma Bhumi, Jama Masjid, Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadheesh Temple, Gita Mandir, Govt. Museum.

Festivals in Mathura: Holi is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna (Feb-March). Holi in Braja is celebrated for several days, at different places around Braja, before the actual day of Holi.

The Art of Mathura: The Mathura Schools of Art reached its pinnacle during the Kushan Period. The Most important work of this period is the anthromorphic image of the Buddha who was hitherto represented by certain symbols. The artists of Mathura and Gandha were pioneers who carved out images of the Buddha.

Vrindavan - Mathura Tours
The Holy soil where Lord Krishna played the flute sporting with the Gopis. where Radhika pined for her Lover. Such is Vrindavan. About 15 kms from Mathura, Vrindavan has about 4,000 temples, innumerable ghats & is connected by rail & road.

What to See

Govind Dev Temple
Built by Raja Man Singh of Jaipur in 1590, the temple is a testimony of the architectural splendour of medieval India.

Rangaji Temple
Vrindavan's longest temple, it was constructed in 1851 by Seth Govind Das Radha Krishna at a cost of Rs. 4.5 million.

Madan Mohan Temple
Situated near Kali Ghat, it is believed to have been built by Kapur Ram Das of Multan

Gokul
It was in Yashoda Maiya's home at Kokul that Nand Gopal was sheltered in secrecy to escape the wrath of the tyrant Kansa. Thronged by Pilgrims, particualrly during Janmashtami & Annakut festivals.The Trinvat Mela is held on the fourth day of the dark half on Kartik month.

Gokul is also associated with Saint Vallabhacharya who lived here for many years. The most important temple is that of Gokul Nath ji. Located 16 kms south east of Mathura & connected by metalled road, Gokul is on the bank of river Yamuna.

Mahavan
On the left bank of Yamuna & 18 kms from Mathura, Mahavan is believed to have cradled Lord Krishna. Shrines of interest include the temple dedicated to Mathura Nath ji. ' Assi Khambha ' ( eighty pillars ) depicts contemporary Buddhist art & sculpture.

The most important tourist spot in Mathura is the Krishna Janambhoomi temple. The temple lies in the very heart of the city and is supposed to have been built on the site where Lord Krishna was born. The temple houses the stone slab that the exact site of his birth. Dwarkadhish temple that falls in the way to Yamuna is another important tourist spot. The temple remains brimming with tourists round the year.

Kusum Sarovar, near the historical Radha Kunj, is a famous tank in the Braj region. It is the same tank where milkmaids used to flirt around with Krishna by giving him flowers. Another important tourist spot in Mathura is the famous Government Museum. The museum houses some of the best statues of Kushana period. Most of them belong to the Mathura School of Architecture that was parallel to the then famous Gandhara School. Apart from that there are some very interesting excursions also such as Nandgaon, Barsana and Vrindavan. They all are in a way or other attached to the life and times of Lord Krishna.

It is next to impossible not talking about milk while discussing Mathura. Mathura offers the best 'Ghee' in the country. There are various sweetmeats too that one can taste. 'Peda' and 'Khurchan' are two of them. In the end, we are confident that you will cherish the moments forever in life.
