Dharamsala was established in the year 1849, by British rulers, for the purpose of having a place where they escape from the scorching heat of Indian plains.
Later on, the hill resort developed into big town and now is divided into two distinct parts – ‘Lower Dharamsala’ i.e. the civil and business area with Courts and Kotwali bazar and ‘Upper Dharamsala’ i.e. places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj.

Bhagsunag Fall
The place is reachable by road from McLeodganj. A dip in the chilly water of the fall gives an extraordinary experience.
St. John's Church
Located some eight kilometers from Dharamsala, this church is situated in the forest between Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj.
It has lovely spotted glass windows and there is a Christian cemetery around it, housing the grave of Lord Elgin who wished to be buried here.
Dharamkot is located 14 kilometers away from Dharamshala and serves as an ideal picnic spot. It can be reached from Bhagsu side, through a trekking route.
The place is situated amidst sub-Himalayan range of mountains and gives panoramic views of the surrounds.
Kunal Pathari
Located three kilometers away from Dharamshala, Kunal Pathari is a temple of the local Goddess. It is quite popular among local masses for religious reasons. People come here everyday, in large numbers, to have a look at the statue of the Goddess and pay their respects.
Dal Lake
Dal Lake is located next to Tibetan Children’s village and, about eleven kilometers away from Dharamsala, forms a major excursion.

Triund
Located 17 kilometers from Dharamsala town and at an altitude of 2,827 meters, Triund is a very popular picnic destination.
